The rise and rise of Chelsea and Liverpool target Charlie Austin

I first saw Charlie Austin play way back in summer 2010, when Swindon Town knocked my beloved Charlton Athletic out of the League One play-offs. Everybody knew who he was; the striker Swindon had drafted in from non-league football to net 20 times in all competitions – an inspired acquisition from then-manager Danny Wilson – but that preceding reputation still didn’t prepare me from the explosion of talent I went on to witness over the course of the next few years.

Austin didn’t score that night – a rare occurrence for a front-man with a one-in-two record for the Robins, playing in the most important game of their season – although he did have a goal ruled out for offside.

Yet, the then-20 year-old was seemingly moving faster and quicker than anybody else on the pitch. It wasn’t his legs making the difference, it was his mind; a step head, a level above even the Addicks’ experienced centre-back partnership of Christian Daley, formerly of the Premiership with West Ham, and Miguel Llera, a real veteran of the Football League.

Austin’s offside goal must have been only fractions. He anticipated the abyss about to open in Charlton’s defence almost too early for his ball-possessing team-mate to act accordingly – and that was by no means the only time he had Daley and Llera on the back foot.

That was the mid-point of a journey taking Austin from the anonymity of non-league to fourth in the top flight’s scoring charts, an adventure spanning Poole Town and the Premier League, a rise and rise that could result in him joining Liverpool or Chelsea this summer, according to the tabloids.

A few seasons later, he returned to The Valley, this time for Burnley, to launch a 25-yard piledriver past a helpless David Button – a goal he later described as the best of his career.

[ad_pod id=’ffc-video-small’ align=’left’]

If I had my doubts about Austin the first time around, the second time he looked like a Premier League player – a striker capable of scoring from anywhere in a variety of ways. That’s what we’ve seen at QPR this season; two goals with his left foot, eleven with his right, four with his head and two from outside the area. A real mix underlining the 25 year-old’s poacher instincts.

But just as it did against Charlton all those years ago, Austin’s intelligence, movement and anticipation still stands out.

Former Football Leaguers are often stigmatised as the more industrious types. Although the Rangers star certainly has that rough streak within him, the top flight’s most notable inductees from the foot of the footballing pyramid over the last few years – namely Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Danny Ings – are all blessed with a unique understanding of the game. Albeit at a lesser level, they’ve seen every situation a thousand times before; their vast game-time experience, Austin making 314 appearances before his inaugural Premier League campaign, can be equally as devastating as any ‘natural’ talent, or any training from one of England’s top academies.

That combination of intelligence, experience, instincts and finishing ability has seen Austin net 17 times in the Premier League this season – a haul only surpassed by Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero, two strikers who cost their clubs a combined £70million, and Tottenham’s Harry Kane, apparently a crossbreed of Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham, according to Les Ferdinand.

Not bad for a striker who started his career at Kintbury Rangers in 2006. Not bad for a striker who cost QPR just £4million, that Hull City turned down in summer 2013 because of a mysterious medical problem, that’s more acclimatised to scoring at the modest dwellings of The City Ground and The Valley than Stamford Bridge or the Emirates.

And at this point, I refuse to speculate where Austin will end up, what level will prove to be his ultimate limit. Back in 2010, it seemed improbable he’d go on to represent Liverpool, Chelsea or the England national team, but he now has five years’ worth of momentum from progression through the English pyramid firmly on his side. Nothing has stopped him so far – even when battling with injuries, he’s scored more than ten league goals during every season of his career, and more than 17 in all competitions since 2008.

With QPR almost certain for the drop, Austin will answer his higher calling this summer. But how far his sensational rise eventually takes him – to silverware, the Champions League or the 2018 World Cup – remains to be seen.

Is this English striker really the man to take Spurs to the next level?

It has been an unusually slow summer at White Hart Lane. Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with player after player, but to the dismay of fans have never ended up making a move. What makes it worse is rivals Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City have all made significant signings to improve their sides ahead of next season.Chairman Daniel Levy has a battle ahead of him to make sure the North London side don’t fall even further behind. In the past few days Spurs have again seen themselves heavily linked with another new arrival; this time West Brom’s Saido Berahino, with The Mirror reporting that the club are about to make a firm bid for the youngster. The fee is thought to be around £15million, although AlbionÂinsist Spurs, or anyone else, are yet to make an official move for him…

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has been a long time admirer of the forward and even made a failed attempt to sign the Baggies hitman back in January.

The Argentine manager already has Harry Kane scoring goals for fun at White Hart Lane, but wants the pair to form a new dream attack, and to lead his side’sÂpursuit of Champions League football.

Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor have both had their chances to cement a first team spot, but have ultimately struggled with life in the Premier League and look like their time at the club is fast coming to an end.

Berahino is the perfect signing for the Londoners and Pochettino should be doing all he can to sign the player.

Kane and Berahino have already developed a good striking relationship from their time with the England U21 side. The duo link up well together and play to each others strengths.

The pair were in incredible form during the U21 European Championship qualifying process, scoring 14 goals between them in the ten game group stage. Both then scored in the playoff game that took England to the Championships.

Unfortunately Berahino got injured just before the tournament and both England and Kane really struggled without him.

The striker was not just in form for his country last season, at West Brom he had a massive impact on the team, scoringÂ20 goals in all competitions.

The youngster would certainly help ease the work load on Kane, who faces a massive year to prove he is not just a one season wonder.

At 21, Berahino is still learning his trade. However, the player is already an extremely talented individual, his speed and clinical finishing are his best attributes, and he can be a complete nightmare for defenders.

Playmaker Christian Eriksen will thrive off providing service for the forward, with pace up front something the club have been lacking in recent times.

With the European Championships just around the corner it is a massive season for the Berahino, and he will be looking to force his way into Roy Hodgson’s plans on a permanent basis after earning his first call up last season.

A deal for the 21-year-old would provide a solid investment for now and the long term future. The forward has the potential to go a long way and being partnered with Kane, who is also only 21, will provide Spurs with a major attacking threat for years to come.

West Ham boss Moyes hints at plans for January transfer window

West Ham United boss David Moyes has hinted that he will look to sign at least one new midfielder during the January transfer window.

Moyes is expected to be busy at the start of 2018 as the Scot looks to bring his own players to the London Stadium for the second half of the 2017-18 campaign.

West Ham have been strongly linked with a move for a new centre-back in recent days, with Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson believed to be the club’s leading target.

Moyes has now revealed that he wants to improve his midfield options in the winter window, but has seemingly ruled out bringing a new striker to the London Stadium next month.

Moyes told West Ham’s official website:

“I’ve got to say every player has shown great desire and is committed in training, but I think we’re short in some areas and overloaded in others. For example, we’ve got lots of forwards, but we’re really short of midfield players.

“We’ve got quite a few who are comfortable playing on the left, but not so many who can play on the right, so we’ve got a little bit of an imbalanced squad which we’ve got to straighten out in January if we can.”

Diafra Sakho is widely expected to leave West Ham next month, but West Ham are well stocked in the final third due to the presence of Javier Hernandez, Andy Carroll, Andre Ayew and Marko Arnautovic.

The Hammers will look to return to winning ways in the Premier League when they welcome West Bromwich Albion on January 2.

Arsenal fans were delighted by Nacho Monreal’s match-winning show vs Palace

Arsenal were in rampant form in the English Premier League on Saturday, destroying Crystal Palace 4-1 at the Emirates.Arsene Wenger’s side badly needed a victory after failing to win any of the last five matches in all competitions but produced a performance of the highest quality to see off their London rivals. The Gunners were four up by the 22nd minute thanks to goals from Alexandre Lacazette, Lauren Koscielny, Alex Iwobi and defender Nacho Monreal, who also provided two assists. The Spaniard was only on the pitch for half an hour, picking up a knock in the first half, but his three direct goal contribution delighted supporters, who paid tribute to his performance after the match on social media.Monreal has rarely been given the freedom to get forward this season but on the left flank was superb against Palace and it’ll be interesting to see whether Wenger deploys him in that role again in matches ahead.Fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on his showing…

Everton fans divided over Mirallas loan departure

Two departures from Merseyside were confirmed last week, with Philippe Coutinho leaving Liverpool for Barcelona and Kevin Mirallas moving from Everton to Olympiakos on loan.

The second of those transfers did not get hardly as much column inches as the first, though.

Mirallas has been part of Everton since 2012 when he signed from the Greek outfit that he will now represent once again.

Since his arrival, the attacking player has scored 38 goals in 186 appearances for the blue half of Merseyside.

In the last few seasons, Mirallas has struggled to keep all of the fanbase onside, mainly due to his attitude on the pitch.

The Belgian dropped down the rankings under former manager Ronald Koeman, and that trend has continued with Sam Allardyce in charge.

In fact, this season, the forward has made just 10 appearances in all competitions and five of them have been in the Premier League.

Once Everton had announced Mirallas’s move to Olympiakos, which will run until the end of the season, fans gave mixed responses.

Pochettino explains importance of Tottenham midfielder

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has called French midfielder Moussa Sissoko one of his most important players.

Sissoko, 28, joined Tottenham from Newcastle United in the summer of 2016.

The midfielder has largely struggled to make his mark at Spurs, with a series of unconvincing performances leading to criticism from the club’s own supporters.

Pochettino, however, has paid tribute to the qualities of the former Toulouse youngster.

Indeed, the Tottenham boss has claimed that there is not another player in his squad that offers what Sissoko does when it comes to balance in the ‘transitions’.

Pochettino told reporters:

“He has been one of our most important players, You have to give the credit to him because he is the only player who gives or provides balance in those transitions – offensive to defensive, defensive to offensive – in the team.

“There is no other player in the team who can provide that. This is the best quality he provides to the team.”

Sissoko has scored twice and provided three assists in 32 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham during the 2017-18 campaign.

Spurs will attempt to book their spot in the fifth round of the FA Cup when they travel to Newport County on Saturday night.

Sissoko, who is valued at £18m by transfermarkt.co.uk, is expected to be in the team for the fourth-round clash against the League Two outfit.

Player Zone: Why Islam Slimani transfer makes more sense for Newcastle

It’s clear what West Ham need, and it’s clear what David Moyes wants.

A new midfielder to boost numbers in a part of the pitch where the Hammers have been lacking is clearly a deadline day desire, but so is a new striker – something which has almost been the holy grail of West Ham transfers over the years, one who can actually score goals.

On deadline day, Moyes’ side appeared to be battling it out with another struggling Premier League side in need of a striker: Rafael Benitez’s Newcastle.

Both, according to The Sun were in for Leicester’s Islam Slimani.

And now it appears as though Newcastle have won the race – it’s a necessary signing for the Magpies, and clearly the Hammers would like a striker, but did West Ham really lose out here? And did Newcastle get what they needed?

The Algerian striker was signed by then-champions Leicester from Sporting Club in Portugal and although he started reasonably brightly under Claudio Ranieri, Slimani could only bag eight goals in all competitions.

That doesn’t sound like a lot in his 29 appearances that year, especially in a side who were the champions of England and were a dodgy penalty call away from having the chance to take part in a Champions League semi-final, but the truth is that Leicester’s season was thrown into disarray early doors – it would have been hard for any new signing to really shine that year.

This season, however, he perhaps hasn’t done a whole lot better, but under new management he’s had less game time. It’s clear that Jamie Vardy needs a workhorse beside him, someone like Shinji Okazaki, whereas Slimani is a target man who’s already shown he can be dangerous in the air in the Premier League.

That would have suited both the Magpies and the Hammers.

Newcastle especially. Whilst it’s clear that, in theory, a player like Aleksandar Mitrovic is exactly what Rafael Benitez needs to win football matches, it’s also quite obvious that logic plays little role when a player like the Serbian is governed so much by temper and emotion. In short, he’s a liability the manager feels he can’t afford.

For West Ham, they too need a striker, and it’s ironic that the player they need to replace is the former Newcastle player Andy Carroll. For all the former England man’s incredible qualities, staying injury-free simply isn’t one of them. And with the Hammers suffering yet another massive injury crisis, it’s clear that they need someone who can slot into the team as soon as possible.

That, though, won’t be Slimani. There have been reports today suggesting that the Algerian attacker has been struck down with a thigh injury suffered in training, which will keep him out for a few weeks. That won’t necessarily be a problem for Newcastle, who might love to get him in straight away, but might also be happier to wait than West Ham will be, given their situation.

But that means it’s back to the drawing board for West Ham, who cannot rely on the fitness of Andy Carroll, have already let Diafra Sakho leave the club, and don’t seem to want to rely on Javier Hernandez.

For Newcastle, this is a necessary signing of a striker they can build an attack around. He is strong, good in the air and has an eye for goal. But for West Ham, you can see why they turned this one down: despite really needing a new striker, they surely couldn’t make their own injury list even longer during a crisis by adding a new player who is actually injured, too.

Pundit claims Tottenham forward is currently ahead of Ronaldo

Former England and Southampton attacker Matt Le Tissier has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane is currently ahead of Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

Kane has scored 33 times in 34 appearances for Tottenham this season, and recently netted his 100th Premier League goal for the London club.

The 24-year-old scored his seventh Champions League goal of the campaign against Juventus on Tuesday night, meanwhile, as Spurs came from two goals behind to draw 2-2.

Ronaldo, on the other hand, has 23 goals in 28 matches in all competitions this season, although he has out-scored Kane nine to seven in the European Cup.

Despite Ronaldo’s incredible form over a long period, Le Tissier has said that he would currently place Kane above the Portuguese, who has won the Ballon d’Or on five occasions.

Le Tissier told Sky Sports:

“Right now, on this season’s form, I would take Harry Kane. Ronaldo has done it over a longer period of time and there is many a season you would pick Cristiano over him.

“But this season, Harry has stepped it up another level. He has been brilliant for the last three or four years but this season he has taken it up a notch.”

Kane will lead England’s attack at the 2018 World Cup this summer.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, will again be the main man for a Portugal side that will be looking to win their first major trophy since triumphing at Euro 2016.

Revealed: Majority of Spurs fans would sign James Maddison over David Brooks

According to recent reports from The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a summer transfer swoop for Sheffield United prodigy David Brooks.

The 20-year-old has impressed in small doses for the Blades this season; he’s only received 711 minutes of game-time in the Championship, but produced a healthy return of two goals and one assists while regularly demonstrating his flair and ingenuity.

But the Wales international is by no means the only promising talent in the Football League and it wasn’t so long ago Tottenham were being linked with fellow youngster James Maddison, the 21-year-old who has bagged nine goals and six assists for Norwich City this term.

With that in mind, we recently asked Tottenham fans which Football League youngster they’d prefer their club to sign and it was the latter who came out on top in our poll, with 68% voting for Maddison.

Are there any other Football League talents you’d like to see Tottenham swoop for this summer? Let us know by commenting below…

In Focus: Jorginho has midfield credentials to help United replace outgoing talent

As reported by The Daily Star, Manchester United are set to rival Liverpool for the signature of Napoli midfielder Jorginho in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the story?

With the potential departures of Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini at the end of the season, Jose Mourinho will need to bring in some fresh midfield talent if he’s to ensure the club progress and compete for honours next term.

One player he has his eye on is Italian international Jorginho.

That’s according to The Daily Star, who say that United are set to tempt Napoli to let go of the 26-year-old with an initial £50m bid.

However, it might not be plain sailing in their efforts to sign him, with the paper also reporting that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer of the midfielder and sees him as a potential replacement for Emre Can.

Who is he?

With over 150 appearances for Napoli, Jorginho is seen as one of the Italian club’s most important players and his form this season has helped them to the top of the Serie A table with just 11 games remaining.

An all-rounder who can defend and move the ball forward into the final third, he could be an ideal replacement for likes of Carrick and Fellaini, certainly having the credentials and experience after four-and-a-half season at Napoli.

At 26 years of age, he’s coming into his prime and spending the money to tie him down to his best years at Old Trafford could be an inspired bit of business from United.
