Liverpool: Fans react to Adam Lallana transfer rumour

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana is being lined up as a potential transfer target for PSG, according to the Daily Mirror.

Lallana, 31, has made just eight appearances this season for the Reds, finding difficulty in breaking into a team that sits at the top of the Premier League.

The former Southampton captain did score the equaliser at Old Trafford to ensure that Jurgen Klopp’s men maintained their unbeaten start, however.

He’s out of contract at Anfield in the summer, leaving the French giants free to pursue his signature on a free transfer when the January transfer window arrives.

Thomas Tuchel wants Lallana to replace forward Edinson Cavani, who is being linked with a move to the MLS.

LA Galaxy are chasing the Uruguayan to replace the recently departed Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who left the club after two seasons.

Lallana would hardly be a natural replacement; in his 186 Premier League games, the England intentional has scored 30 goals, a strike rate that falls some way short of Cavani’s.

Here’s how some Liverpool fans reacted to the transfer rumour:

Bernardo Silva could be a big miss for Man City after impressing for Portugal

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Bernardo Silva put in another impressive display for Portgual against Luxembourg and showed exactly what his club side will miss against Chelsea next weekend.

On the chalkboard

The midfielder is suspended for the visit of Chelsea next Saturday and despite possessing quality throughout the side, Pep Guardiola could certainly do with his presence.

Not only does he work tirelessly for his team and have an eye for goal – with five this season – but he possesses the quality that could provide the difference against Frank Lampard’s in-form side.

The Blues will be well aware of the threat posed by Man City, and could sit deep in an attempt to counter the threat of Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling.

The through ball from Silva which allowed Bruno Fernandes to score on Sunday was exquisite, and it underlines what he brings to the side from a creative perspective, and in a game which could be closely-fought the Citizens could really do with that added edge.

Big loss

The City man was playing in a different position for his country operating in the middle of the park, but he was still able to influence proceedings and provided a different type of threat than usual.

He is often brilliant on the ball and uses his trickery to twist and turn away from opponents, with 2.4 successful dribbles per league game this term, but against Luxembourg it was his passing which shone.

Kevin De Bruyne acts as the primary playmaker for City but Bernardo made three key passes on Sunday and kept possession ticking over nicely with 87% pass accuracy, and that means there will be greater pressure on the Belgian to perform against Chelsea.

The Portuguese has scored important goals in big games for Guardiola previously, such as in the Champions League against Tottenham in the last campaign, whilst a brilliant display against Liverpool at the turn of the year was pivotal in City’s comeback to win the league.

With Chelsea riding high and conceding just four goals in their last five league games the home side may need a big performance or moment of magic from one of their players to win the match, and without Silva the chances of that happening take a big hit.

Tottenham Hotspur fans react to reports Mourinho could help them sell the club

Some big changes are undoubtedly heading Tottenham Hotspur’s way in the not so distant future.

After all, appointing Jose Mourinho of all people as your new head coach is bound to stir up the pot just a little bit, to say the least.

But interestingly enough, the appointment of the Special One might bring even bigger changes to the club as a whole and not just in the way the play.

According to an exclusive report coming from ESPN, Mourinho’s arrival could make Tottenham Hotspur a much more attractive club for potential investors and Spurs actually may have appointed the Portuguese coach with exactly that in mind.

Of course the new stadium, their position in London and regular participation in the Champions League will also help their cause but Mourinho could be the one to seal the deal.

Upon hearing this update, however, loads of Spurs fans were actually happy and would sell the club immediately, as it seems.

Some even labelled this as “best news ever” and want the deal to go through as soon as possible.

You can see some of their reactions down in the tweets below:

Everton’s Yannick Bolasie swoop a major Steve Walsh disaster

When Yannick Bolasie made the switch from fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace to Everton back in the summer of 2016, then Toffees manager Ronald Koeman spoke glowingly of his latest recruit.

He said: “Yannick is a player who has been a long time on my radar because he’s the type of winger I like – fast, strong and he can play different positions in the forward line.”

The winger had spent four seasons at Selhurst Park, and was a Premier League proven option, so the transition to Goodison Park should surely not have been a major one for him to get used to.

But instead, the man signed by £25m signed under Steve Walsh’s time at the club, has been a major disaster.

He has played just 32 times in his time at Goodison Park, scoring a measly two goals and providing just four assists. It all means that Bolasie has actually cost the Toffees a staggering £12.5m per goal.

Such has been the nature of his woeful Everton career, that he finds himself out on loan for the second consecutive season, and for his third different team: he spent the first-half of last year at Aston Villa, before moving to Anderlecht, whilst this year has seen him feature for Portuguese giants Sporting CP.

How much do you really know about the Farhad Moshiri era? Answer 25 simple questions below…

It has all been a bit of a catastrophe on the part of the Toffees. They may have thought they were getting a winger who could provide them with a touch of magic, but instead it’s Carlo Ancelotti’s side who have been hoodwinked the most.

It’s now incredibly difficult to see how Bolasie can have a long-term future on Merseyside, and it may well be the case that he walks out of the exit door sooner rather than later.

Meanwhile, this Everton ace is still draining money at the club.

Leeds fans react to Kalvin Phillips’ gesture

Leeds United fans are loving their midfielder Kalvin Phillips even more after his heartwarming gesture on Sunday afternoon.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The 24-year-old has been pictured laying down a wreath of flowers underneath a plaque dedicated to Chris Loftus and Kevin Speight who tragically lost their lives in Istanbul 20 years to the day.

Phillips and his Whites teammates have been forced to train from home and in isolation as the current pandemic has put pay to any action on the training pitch let alone at Elland Road.

But the Thorp Arch academy graduate clearly has deep ties to the club as shown with this classy gesture – taking time out of his day as well as leaving the safety of his home to pay his respects.

And the Leeds faithful have been lapping it up on social media.

Total Duds: Celtic spending £6.48 million on Rafael Scheidt ended up being a complete disaster

This article forms part of our Total Duds feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how bad a deal the club got.

Back in 1999, John Barnes and Kenny Dalglish were building their defence for Scottish side Celtic, and picked up defender Rafael Scheidt for £6.48 million from Brazilian side Gremio, per Transfermarkt. This is currently the eighth most expensive signing the club has ever made, and emphasises the expectations the player had when he joined.

There have been some poor signings at the club, but Scheidt ranks up there as one of the worst, and will be a player that fans are quick to forget.

The Brazilian was signed in July, yet only managed to make his debut in March the following year due to injuries, via Football Insider. This wasn’t the start of a great career at the club, as during his spell in Scotland he only went on to make two appearances, per Transfermarkt.

Whilst he was contracted to Celtic, he was shipped back out on loan to the Brazilian league, with Corinthians taking him for two years until 2002. During this time, it was revealed by the player that Martin O’Neill had some pretty scathing things to say about him, suggesting that the Northern Irishman had said: “I like footballers who are not like you. I like footballers who play well.”

It was clear for all associated with the club that he was not wanted anywhere near the first team after his loan spell ended. In fact, he was no longer eligible for a UK work permit by this point and they wanted him off their books so bad that they paid up the remainder of the contract so he could move to Atletico Mineiro. This would have costed the club a fair chunk of money.

The defender will be remembered by many of the Hoops faithful as one of the worst signings in the club’s history, and a huge waste of over £6 million.

Tottenham Hotspur: Fans react to Alasdair Gold’s update on Marcus Edwards

Tottenham Hotspur could benefit from Marcus Edwards’ heroics in Portugal, according to Alasdair Gold via football.london.

Edwards has lit up the Portuguese Liga NOS this season with Vitoria Guimaraes and is clearly showing signs he is heading towards his full potential. The football correspondent noted that Spurs could capitalise on the former player sooner rather than later, as it would make sense financially to sign him back in the summer, given the economic uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.

Gold wrote: “There was never any doubt over his talent at Tottenham, only his ability to apply it to its full potential within a team. Tottenham were well aware that if Edwards found his rhythm at Vitoria then they could benefit far more from a more advanced player than the one who left the club last summer.”

He added: “That is why when they allowed the youngster to leave for Portugal they inserted a 50 per cent sell-on fee into the deal.”

After arriving at Vitoria Guimaraes from the Lilywhites on a free transfer, the 21-year-old has dazzled the crowds at the Estadio D. Afonso Henriques Stadium, scoring four goals, creating four assists, taking 1.5 shots per game, averaging 1.2 key passes and completing 2.9 dribbles per game on average in the top flight so far (WhoScored).

Understandably, the youngster’s performances have caught the attention of a number of potential suitors, including teams back at home and abroad. The board’s shrewd move may enable the North London club to reap the rewards in the future.

Naturally, many Spurs fans reacted to Gold’s update on social media, with one fan dubbing Edwards as “talented” and another asking “is there a buy back clause?”

Sheffield Wednesday: Fans react to recent Jose Semedo interview

In a recent interview with Dom Howson, former Sheffield Wednesday player Jose Semedo has opened up about his departure from the club three years ago.

In 2017, the Portuguese defender was released after putting in seven years of service to the Yorkshire club (via Sky Sports). Now, Semedo has revealed the details behind his dismissal from the side, stating the way he was let go was ‘unfair’.

The 35-year-old has given his side of the story, claiming he was waiting for a phone call to discuss his future with Wednesday, but that call never came.

“All I wanted to do was play for Sheffield Wednesday,” Semedo told Yorkshire Live. “I couldn’t see myself with another club but no one called me about renewing my contract. I was very disappointed. It was the hardest time in my career.”

Some fans have responded to his comments on the situation and many are wishing the club hadn’t let Semedo leave. One Wednesdayite has said it’s ‘disgusting’ that he wasn’t given a proper send off and has slammed the board saying ‘shows where we are as a club now’.

Bobby Carroll – Profile

Name: Bobby Carroll

Club: Everton

Date of Birth: 12 October 2001

Position: Midfielder (Central/Attacking)

Bobby Carroll – his career so far

The now 18-year-old midfield gem Bobby Carroll has been a long-lasting part of Everton’s academy, only fairly recently graduating from their U16 academy to become a fully-fledged U18 squad member, solidifying his place in the team and turning quite a few heads in the upper hierarchy along the way as well.

Even though he is still patiently waiting for his senior team call-up and the big Premier League bow, the young midfielder is still regarded as one of the best on his level and certainly one to keep an eye on in the near future too.

But most of his most important exploits have arrived for the Blues’ U18 team as Carroll can already boast with a total of 37 appearances while also scoring four goals and even more importantly, and certainly more impressively, tallying 17 assists under his belt in the process as well.

The Doncaster-born gem played an important role for the Toffees’ young squad as they managed to finish third in the U18 Premier League (North) table back in 2018/19 and also reached the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup.

And considering he’s one of the brightest young midfield talents in the academy and is now 18 years old, big things are expected to start happening for Carroll in the coming years. That elusive first-team call-up can’t be too far away either and seeing him feature for the senior Toffees’ team should really be just a matter of time by this stage of his development.

Of course, it is to be expected that he features for the U23s before making such a big jump across the ranks but he has the talent and the potential to do great things if groomed properly. Let’s see what Everton decide to do with their academy gem.

Transfer latest

In some rather interesting and important Everton news, Carroll penned his first professional contract with the club back in January 2019 and is therefore still largely expected to stay at Goodison Park for the coming years.

There are currently no transfer news or transfer rumours suggesting other clubs are prowling around the youngster or are interested in acquiring his services in the near future but with him approaching his 20s and still to make a first-team debut, the Toffees will have to start considering their options.

Maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea to ensure he gets some senior experience before throwing him into the fires of the Premier League. But of course, given his talent and potential, he could also go straight into the Everton first-team once he is deemed ready.

As of right now, however, no transfer rumours are suggesting a promotion is in the cards or on Carlo Ancelotti’s mind for that matter.

Player profile

Carroll is a highly creative outlet that likes operating in advanced areas on the pitch but can also be deployed in a deeper or even a wider role if necessary. The central midfield was, according to Transfermarkt’s database of games, his preferred and most used position during his stay with Everton’s U18 squad.

But what makes him so effective in either of the roles is his ability to progress the ball and make runs into the final third. He can do this either through precise passing or by just carrying the ball in his feet and beating the markers along the way.

Once he is inside the final third and closer to the opposition’s goal, he has a mean shot from the distance and quite a keen eye for rattling the inside of the net. But his contribution is also not limited to the offensive output only.

Part of the reason why he can be deployed in deeper areas is his strong sense of positioning and also good tackling abilities. Carroll can turn defence into attack in an instant and be the creative spark that starts a deadly transition for his team.

Southampton vs Manchester City preview: team news, form, how to watch

Southampton welcome Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City to St Mary’s on Sunday in a match between two sides still with plenty to play for this season.

After a terrible start to the campaign that included a humiliating 9-0 home defeat to Leicester City, the Saints have really turned things around and have now reached the 40-point mark with six matches still to play.

Danny Ings in particular has been on top form and once again displayed his skills in a 3-1 win over Watford last weekend.

Meanwhile, City exacted some revenge on champions Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday with a 4-0 win, but Guardiola will now turn his focus to assessing his squad and seeing which positions he most needs to invest in, come the summer.

Form

Southampton have been much improved in the second half of the season but their form remains patchy, with Hassenhuttl’s team winning three and losing three of their last six Premier League matches.

However, since the resumption of football, a rather unfortunate defeat to Arsenal for which goalkeeper Alex McCarthy must own some of the blame has been the only setback.

City have not been their consistent selves, either,  losing two of their last five Premier League matches, including the defeat to Chelsea which gifted Liverpool the title.

Aside from that match though they have been excellent since the restart, blowing both Arsenal, Burnley and Liverpool away with a combined 12 goals scored.

Team news

Currently, Southampton are only set to be without Sofiane Boufal and Pierre Emil Hojbjerg for this match, both of whom are doubtful due to thigh and ankle problems respectively.

Stuart Armstrong is a candidate to return after dropping to the bench for the Watford match, while Yan Valery and Michael Obafemi could also be recalled.

Sergio Aguero is City’s only worry in injury terms, with the Argentine not set to return until August due to a knee injury.

After his virtuoso performance against Liverpool, Phil Foden could start once again, while Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva will be hoping for a recall.

How to watch

The match kicks off at 19:00 UTC at St Mary’s this Sunday and will be broadcast live on Premier Sports, with fans also able to follow the match online via live stream.
